Laos

Laos. The Land of a Million Elephants. Nestled between Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Mountainous landscapes, the Mekong River, French colonialism and a complex recent history have blended together, creating a country that is waking from its slumber and finding its way in the wider world.

Visa Requirements

As of April 2025, you can apply for a single entry e-visa (valid at 9 points of entry) at least 5 days before arrival. Visas on arrival are also available at many entry points.

Fees are involved whether buying an e-visa or on arrival visa. The cost and length of visa depend on your nationality.

Always check the Laos government website and your own government for the latest information ahead of travel to avoid any mishaps.

Climate

Laos has a tropical climate that is influenced by monsoons. There are two seasons, Rainy (monsoon) and Dry. Rainy season occurs from May to October and the dry season from November to April. April tends to be the hottest month, and August the wettest.

Safety

Please check your local government website for advice (UK nationals click here). We stuck to major travel routes, kept our belongings close, followed guidance and felt safe.

There are still some major issues in Laos that can impact locals and tourists today. Please check the website above or your local website for more information, and stick to main routes when travelling Laos.

Sim Card

Laos has three major mobile network operators: Unitel, Laos Telecom and TPlus, once in town, you will be able to find shops selling tourist sim deals, you may even be able to negotiate them down a bit. To save hassle, you can purchase an e-sim ahead of time.

We recommend Saily, use this code: SPECIAL5 to get 5% off when purchasing.
